US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Addresses Prominent Indian American Association
Oak Brook, IL, July 11,2006: On July 10,2006, the American Assocaiation of Physicians of Indian origin (AAPI)
hosted a luncheon which featured a keynote address by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Representing over 42,000 physicians and 15,000 medical students and residents over the country, AAPI is the largest ethnic medical association and the most prominent Indian American professional associations in the United States. This luncheon was held in conjunction with the Asian-American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) for the purpose of inaugurating the Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this year which pledges that the two associations will strive to work jointly on charitable, social and legislative issues of common interest.
Paying tribute to the Indian American community, Secretary Rice said this community has contributed to the "intellectual capital of American universities" and "by the dint of its hardwork, not only added to the wealth of our nation, but also to the character of our country."
In her address, Secretary Rice emphasized the improving relationship between the U.S. and India governmets and, in particular, lauded the efforts of private citizens and groups in laying the foundation for this growing bond: "our people points a way forward for the cooperation between our governments."
Secretary Rice went on to mention the importance of U.S.-India relations and the efforts of the Bush administration to strengthen ties. Secretary Rice said "India and United States are noe closer than ever" and the partnership between thew two countries "has the power to transform the world." The key to realizing that potential, she said, is the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Initiative proposed by President bush.
AAPI President Elect, Hemantkumar Patel, stated, that "we look forward to finding ways to work with AAHOA on all of these projects. And Madam Secretary, we hope that we can find ways to work with the U.S. State Department on our India-related projects - all of which further our mutual goals of helping the underpriviledged around the globe.
Other featured speakers included the India Caucus co-chair in the House of Representatives, Gary
Ackerman, and India's Ambassador to US Ronen Sen. Other honest guests included Assistant Secretary
of State Richard A Boucher along with US Ambassador to India David Mulford.
