Dear Friends,
Very pleased to report that we had a highly successful Indo US summit on January 2nd to 4th, 2012 in Hyderabad India. So what makes this summit so successful; someone once said "There is no freeway to the future. No paved highway from here to tomorrow. There is only wilderness...only uncertain terrain. There are no road maps...no sign posts.....So pioneering leaders rely only upon a compass and a dream". For the past 5 years we from AAPI have demonstrated our will and courage by bringing the best minds from across the ocean, combined with the best and brightest locally in seeking to form a truly global partnership. Many lessons have been learned during the last 4 years and we are still learning. The focus this year was on how to start educational intervention and implementation of the best practices at the rural health centers to bring about much needed impact on the outcomes at the grass root level. There were also intense discussion about the important role of tele-medicine and knowledge-networks in bridging the gap in access and quality of health care at rural level through innovative projects like "ECHO" spearheaded by Dr. Sanjeev Arora at university of New Mexico.
Inaugural event was blessed by the Chief Minister, Health Minister, and two other cabinet ministers. They appreciated the services of AAPI to improve rural health of people of India. Emphasis and collaboration was sought in helping reduce the IMR and MMR in Andhra Pradesh. Our successes, particularly in Maternal and Child Health; is an outstanding example of public and private partnership with support of people who are passionate about the cause. A concern was shown for the NCDs especially Diabetes, as in 2020 Andhra Pradesh is going to be the Diabetic Capital of India. Resources were being sought nationally and internationally. AAPI's contributions were emphasized.
This is the first time collaboration and partnerships were built with GAPIO to continue our journey of bringing best practices, implementation and success. This was a unique session focused on existing co-morbidities and the importance of collaboration. Our special Guest of Honor, US Consul General Ms. Katherine Dhanani shared the relevance of cooperation and working together. All the markers to determine the progress of a nation from a developing to a developed nation were addressed.
This is the first time emphasis was made on Education. We had Mr. Stephen Seeling from ECFMG speak to Medical students on how to navigate their way into the US Health System. He spoke to students both in Hyderabad and Jaipur at SMS College. Dr. Nayapati Rao chaired the Educational Session on raising the Bar on the Medical Education in India based on the Flexnar Practices in US. He had a round table session with several leaders.
Other highlights of the Summit were:
CME session Chaired by Dr. Suresh Reddy was very well attended
The cultural evening by Parvati Ghantasala set an appropriate cultural tone to the summit
A confluence of dance styles to illustrate songs of Ghantasala proved that the traditional arts have a lasting appeal. The lasting appeal of age-old music and dance, whether film or mythology, has to be seen to be believed
The Pre-Summit tour to Orissa and Tirupathi was a great experience. Would like to acknowledge Kalinga Hospital, Dr. Amit Chakravarthy, Dr. Uma Mishra (Also Chairman of Kalinga Hospital) for making it successful. Mr. Prakash Swamy to help with the Tirupathi arrangements .Members had a beautiful Darshan of the lord for the New Year
On January 7th many members represented AAPI at Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) in Jaipur. At the health panel discussion with the ministry, it was agreed a portal will be setup and will allow our members be matched with appropriate volunteer oppurtunities in INDIA.
