AAPI Signs AMA Coalition Letter to Congress on Medicare SGR

Nov 15, 2011

Washington, D.C. - The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) issued the following statement after signing a coalition letter to Congress led by the American Medical Association (AMA) urging a full repeal of the Medicare sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula.

“Congress has repeatedly punted the SGR problem down the road and physicians along with their patients cannot wait any longer for action,” said AAPI president Dr. Sunita Kanumury. “The super committee must take definitive action to address this issue without further delays or uncertainty,” Kanumury said.

“We are pleased to join the AMA’s latest coalition effort,” said Dr. VijayaLakshmi Appareddy, chair of AAPI’s legislative committee. “We will continue to advocate for the best interests of our members and ensure that our voices are heard on Capitol Hill,” Appareddy said.

The sign on letter to the congressional deficit reduction committee notes that Medicare reimbursements are to be cut by 27 percent on January 1, 2012 because of the flawed SGR formula. The letter was signed by 64 medical societies and associations, and 51 state medical associations. It was also sent to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, House Committee on Ways and Means, and the Senate Finance Committee.

This is the third coalition letter AAPI has signed onto with the AMA this fall. The previous letters were also sent to the deficit reduction committee and dealt with medical liability reform and SGR reform.
