AAPI Statement on Super Committee's Failure to Reach Deal
Nov 21, 2011
Washington, D.C. - The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) issued the following statement after the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction failed to reach a bipartisan agreement on spending cuts, triggering $1.2 trillion of automatic cuts scheduled to take place in 2013.
"The lack of action today is disappointing," said Dr. Sunita Kanumury, AAPI president. "Congress left even more uncertainty on the table today by not acting to pass medical liability reform, Medicare SGR reform and preserving graduate medical education (GME) funding. Physicians simply cannot practice with so much uncertainty from the federal government. Without any further action by Congress, Medicare reimbursements will be cut by 27 percent on January 1, 2012. This is unacceptable.
"We are very disappointed and hope that Congress will understand how its lack of action is hurting the ability of doctors to take care of their patients,"said Kanumury.
